For anyone who doesn’t know Mathworks, could you tell us a little bit about what they do?
Mathworks It is the leading developer of mathematical computing software and has two major platforms, MATLAB and Simulink. MATLAB is a programming environment for algorithm development, data analysis, visualization, and numerical computation. Simulink is a block diagramming environment for simulation and model-based design of multi-domain, compact engineering systems. Engineers and scientists around the world rely on these products to accelerate discovery, innovation, and development in the automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, electronics, industrial automation and other industries.
MATLAB and Simulink are also essential teaching and research tools in the world’s top universities and educational institutions.
What trends have you noticed in the field of mathematical computing?
The increasing use of cloud platforms and applications by engineers and researchers is an important development. While this has been going on for years with consumer applications, we’re seeing a huge increase in the amount of cloud first customers who want their data, tools, and platforms in the same environment.
The catalyst behind cloud computing is the enhanced use of IoT devices. Sensors are no longer found only in industrial machines; They are present in almost every electronic product on the market today and have changed people’s expectations about product performance and connectivity. MATLAB and Simulink make product design and validation easier for companies adapting their products to the age of the Internet of Things.

I read that in March MathWorks focused its software updates on “going beyond its traditional science base – and looking to developers of autonomous vehicles”. How do these updates do this?
The auto market is not new to us because our tools have been used to create embedded software for decades. However, we are seeing many forward-looking automakers such as Tesla, Toyota, and others embracing a strong commitment to using software as a core feature of their customers’ experience. Automated driving systems rely heavily on cloud technologies and artificial intelligence, and our flagship platforms help engineers integrate and validate their designs.
In what ways is MathWorks helping address climate change with advances in clean energy products, climate research, financial risk and sustainability?
The global spread of electric vehicles (EVs) is a fundamental countermeasure against climate change and an area in which we are helping. What is important to understanding electric vehicles is that they require smarter software to control and manage their power. MATLAB, Simulink and Simscape enable engineers to load the development of electric vehicles through the systematic use of data and models. Automakers can use prefabricated reference applications to reduce the simulation barrier, battery models, battery management systems (BMS) development, traction engine models, motor control unit (MCU) development, and more.
